CopiaFacts defines ranges of result or error codes which apply either to call placement or to fax transmission and reception. The list shown below may be superseded by the definitive list in the latest FF7.SMR file.

In many cases the manufacturers' codes are biased by a fixed value to avoid overlap of codes used by different manufacturers.  If you see an error code returned by the fax board in the CopiaFacts low-level trace, you may not be able to find it directly in the list below.  For example an error 263 might be returned on a remote disconnect by a Dialogic fax receive, but this will appear on a $fax_status command in the MCF as 8263, which is also where you will find it in the list below.

To create a custom SMR file to override the default entries in FF7.SMR, make a custom file containing just the entries you wish to change, and name it on the $retry_parms command in your configuration file.  Outcomes not matched in your custom file will be looked up in the default table.  We strongly recommend NOT using the name FF7.SMR for your custom override file.  More detailed instructions will be found in FF7.SMR, which can be edited in Notepad.

Most of the fax error codes indicate details of low-level errors reported by the fax board. A full explanation of some errors requires familiarity with the ITU Recommendation T.30 (formerly CCITT Recommendation T.30). This document is available from the International Telecommunication Union in Geneva, Switzerland, and from its representatives or standards bodies in other countries. Some errors can be identified using common-sense interpretations of the many three-letter acronyms such as DCN - DisCoNect; RTN - ReTrain Negative, EOM - End Of Message, etc. For example, an error message indicating that a DCN command has been received usually means that the remote fax machine has told CopiaFacts to disconnect the line. Often an error will involve a timeout. For non-ISDN lines T.30 defines four timers, T1, T2, T3 and T5, which are used at various stages of sending the fax. T1 is a timer of 35 ±5 seconds which begins on entering Phase B, the pre-message procedure for identifying and selecting the required fax facilities. So a T1 timeout indicates that the faxes failed to 'sync up' within this time. The T2 timer is 6 ±1 seconds and is used to maintain control of individual commands and responses between the two machines, for example if the line is poor and many attempts are needed to negotiate an acceptable baud rate. T3 is only used when an operator makes a manual intervention (PRI - PRocedure Interrupt). T5 is only used in ECM - Error Correction Mode.

For e-mail errors, error codes used in the range 421 to 554 are those defined in the relevent Internet RFC documentation. RFC 2821 lists the most common errors, but it is often difficult to determine the precise cause in a case such as '501 Syntax error in SMTP command'. In many cases the remote mail server will provide further information, which is then saved in a system variable named EMAIL_ERROR, visible in the SENT or FAIL FS file. These texts and extended error codes are described in RFC 1893, and an example extended error for 501 would be '5.5.4. Invalid Address'. Be aware that in this example it might be the From: address or the To: address which has been rejected.
