The document conversions using Microsoft Office conversions have currently been validated with Office 97, Office 2000, Office 2003 and Office 2007 versions of these programs. Although Microsoft provide automation objects for backward compatibility with each version of Office, some users report variations in the way these work. Accordingly you may force the use of the Office 2003 interface (if a later version is installed) by using the convert option O2003, of the Office 2000 interface by using the convert option O2K and of the Office 97 interface by using convert option O97. The default is to use the latest version installed. Note that Microsoft do not officially support operation with more than one version of Office installed.
To work with Office 2007 format files if you do not have Office 2007 installed, you should install the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack from http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/products/HA101686761033.aspx. This then allows .DOCX, .XLSX and .PPTX files to be processed using an earlier release of Microsoft Office. The Document Converter detects the presence of the compatibility pack by checking for a ".docx" key in the Registry hive HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. You can override this with the environment variable MOC_INSTALLED.
Note that the compatibility pack is not currently supported for .XLSX broadcast lists: to process this format you must have Excel 2007 installed.
Microsoft Word can also be used to render HTML documents from a local disk file, by specifying the HTMLWord keyword in $convert_options.
It is strongly recommended that you do a 'full' install of the Office application(s) you are using so that no features are set for installation 'on demand' when required for a specific document. Users have also reported problems and delays when a virus checker is set to examine each document as it is loaded by Office.
Files to be converted by Word must contain in the first four bytes either "{\rt" (for Rich Text Format files) or hexadecimal "D0 CF 11 E0" (for Word .DOC files). The $convert_options keyword 'WordPerfect' also enables the signature hexadecimal 'FF 57 50 43' and can be used when Word has been configured to accept such files.
