Using Star Office and Open Office

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

If you have a Windows copy of Sun StarOffice, you may prefer to use it for conversion of Word, Excel and Powerpoint files. StarOffice improves your security because it does not execute any macros that may be embedded in the document. Conversion using StarOffice has only been tested with StarOffice 7 and Star Office 8, and has not been tested with any OpenOffice release. It is generally more straightforward to use than the Microsoft Office equivalent, but there may be some very complex documents which it cannot handle.

The location of Star Office 7 or 8 will be determined from the registry.  To override the path to SOFFICE.EXE, assign the full pathname to environment variable STAROFFICEPATH.

To use StarOffice for Word, Excel and Powerpoint files, add the keywords SODOC, SOXLS and/or SOPPT respectively to the $convert_options command in the user profile referenced from the FS file. If there is a $convert_options command in this user profile, you can also override it with a $convert_options command in the FS file itself.

If both the keywords SODOC and HTMLWord are given, local HTML documents will be rendered by Star Office.
