Specify E-Mail Immediate Retry Settings

$email_settings dnstimeout dnsattempts smtptimeout rate [IPv6]

This command specifies the immediate retries and timeouts for the email subsystem.

The default values for this command were changed in 2018, having remained the same since e-mail was first supported in CopiaFacts and a fax attachment might take 15 seconds to send by e-mail. The defaults also now take account of the fact that busy servers may take longer to process and confirm receipt of an e-mail than it takes to transmit it.  On the other hand the timeouts recommended in RFC5231 seem over-generous when compared with processing times we see in the logs of many CopiaFacts users, so the defaults do not match these times.

The parameters on this command are used as follows:

dnstimeout The number of milliseconds to wait for each MX-record look-up to complete. Default 5000ms.
dnsattempts The number of attempts to look up MX-records for the e-mail destination address. If there are multiple DNS servers configured in the network settings on the machine running COPIAFACTS, then each DNS server is used in turn during each 'attempt'. The value must be one or greater.  If there are no 'A' records for the domain, the look-up is abandoned after the first pass through the DNS servers. Default 2.
smtptimeout The number of milliseconds to wait for a response to each outgoing SMTP command and each block of data. This does not include the actual transmission of data. Default 60000ms. For transmission of data and confirmation from the server, the timeout is the larger of smtptimeout and 120000 plus a data allowance calculated from the rate parameter below.
rate The worst-case transmission rate in bytes per second, or in kilobytes per second if suffixed with KB. This is used to calculate an increment to the timeout counter corresponding to the size of the e-mail body and encoded attachments. For example if you have an Internet upload capacity of 5Mb/s (0.55MB/s) from a machine running 2 channels of e-mail, enter a value of 275KB.  Default 100KB/s
IPv6A keyword to indicate that IPv6 will be used when available.  Currently we recommend not using this option.

If you need to modify any setting, all numeric values must be supplied.

The numeric values can be overridden using variables EMAIL_DNS_TIMEOUT, EMAIL_DNS_ATTEMPTS, EMAIL_SMTP_TIMEOUT and EMAIL_SMTP_RATE.

Defaults: DNS timeout: 5000, DNS attempts: 2, SMTP timeout: 120000, rate 100000.

Example:

$email_settings 5000 3 60000 100KB
