Using the trace viewer

Scroll Prev Top Next More

This topic describes some useful techniques and tips for TRCVIEW. For full details of the operation of the trace viewer, see the TRCVIEW topic. For details of all the key and mouse functions in TRCVIEW, use the Help/Keyboard&Mouse menu item, or see the KeyBoard Shortcuts section in the TRCVIEW topic.

Please use TRCVIEW to open and examine the trace files you send to Copia support.

System Operation Overview

To get an overview of how your system is running, find and open TRCVIEW in the Copia Shortcuts folder, or from the Copia section of the start menu, and open it, then:

•Use File/Open to load the current day's trace file (.TR0 for Sunday, TR1 for Monday, etc.). You can use the Options Menu to select Start at End of File if not already set, which is usually more convenient.

•If you have started and stopped COPIAFACTS during the day, press F12 to display all sessions.

•Press Control-R to override the TRCVIEW filters and show only trace lines containing "Result:".The balance of red and green lines will show you respectively the proportion of failed and successful inbound and outbound transactions. This assumes that you have the default RESULT_ variables defined in FAXFACTS.CFG. You can press Control-R again to revert to normal TRCVIEW filtering.

•If you are still using CopiaFacts version 8, Control-R is not supported. Instead, use F3 to open the filter/highlight dialog, then enter (without the quotes) "Result:" followed by three space characters, then close the filter dialog and press F7 to filter on that string.

Examining one transaction

In an COPIAFACTS engine trace file (.TRx), trace lines for multiple channels are intermixed. To concentrate on one transaction only, scroll to display one of the trace lines for the transaction on the center line (usually yellow), and press F9. Then the display will show only lines for the single channel used for the transaction. Press F9 again to show all channels.

In a CFGATEWAY trace (.GWx), trace lines for multiple concurrent e-mails are intermixed. Use the same technique with F9 to show only the trace lines for one transaction.  Note that the Gateway processes incoming e-mails in two phases: first to receive and store the e-mail in the Save Messages folder, then to process it and create FS files.

In a trace file created from FFTRACE (.FTx) for multiple applications or libraries, trace lines may be intermixed for different applications and channels. Use the Applications menu first to filter on the application of interest, then use the same technique with F9 to show only the trace lines for one transaction. In this case the filter operates on the text on the trace line in square brackets, if any, for example [line 201].

Advanced filtering

As well as filtering on a single text string, in the filter/highlight dialog (F3), you can use the logical functions and or not by embedding the designated delimiter symbols in the text string. For details, click on 'delimiters' in the filter/highlight dialog.

Bookmarks

When navigating a large trace file, we recommend using the Bookmarks feature to drop up to ten bookmarks in the file. These can be saved with the file if this option is set in the Options menu, which allows you to return to the same items if the file is re-opened. Your bookmarks are not included if the trace file is 'sent to Copia'.

Viewing other Trace files

To view trace files from applications other than COPIAFACTS, FFTRACE must be running to collect and write the FTx trace information from desktop applications.  For service applications, the trace must be enabled in FFTRACE File/Applications, but FFTRACE does not need to be left running.
